Position Overview

The Senior Director of Capital & Engineering Procurement is responsible for developing a strategic, integrated approach to Capital Expenditure (Capex) and Engineering procurement, optimized for business value and savings, and achieved through strategic planning and external spend management. The role will develop and implement policies and procedures for the procurement of services, materials, equipment related to large capital projects, for the establishment and management of strategic procurement agreements and to support annual CapEx budgeting processes.

Job Description

 

The role reports directly into the Senior VP Global Engineering and functions as a key connector, collaborating with internal stakeholders to understand CapEx and Engineering requirements, while also representing FDB externally to identify and evaluate potential suppliers, negotiate domestic and international supply agreements and oversee the effective execution of contracts and agreements. Through this interaction, the role to foster strong supplier relationships and delivers cost-effective purchasing solutions that are aligned with the company's strategic objectives and values. 

 

The role will provide oversight and support to Capex procurement teams at sites and projects to ensure compliance with applicable policies and procedures. The role will employ procurement best practices to identify and drive capital cost reduction and avoidance.  Additionally, the role will develop and maintain strong relationships with strategic suppliers to ensure optimal service, performance and cost.  The role will also lead negotiations with key suppliers to ensure competitive pricing, quality, and delivery timelines, developing and maintaining contracts that align with the company’s goals and values.  The role reports to the SVP of Global Engineering. 

 

This role directly impacts the financial performance of the organization by driving cost-effective procurement practices and supporting capital projects through strategic supplier relationships and effective spend management, enhancing overall project success and operational efficiency. 

 

Interacts with internal and external executive level management, requiring negotiation of extremely critical matters. Influences policymaking and strategy based on communication strategies and persuasion skills. Partners with executive leadership team for the function to provide cohesive direction towards company goals.  

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Leadership & Strategy: Lead and manage the capital and engineering procurement process, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to the project teams and project procurement leads.  Collaborate closely with Global Procurement to facilitate the network of procurement professionals ensuring the supplier relationship program is well understood and followed. 
  • Procurement Strategy Development: Develop and implement the overall capital and facilities procurement strategy aligned with business objectives, focusing on sourcing, strategic planning, and external spend management of key vendors and suppliers.  This will also require close collaboration and alignment with the Global Procurement Organization 
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Collaborate with key stakeholders across departments such as Engineering, Procurement, Quality, Legal, and Finance to understand needs and optimize purchasing processes. 
  • Business Process: Manage procurement business process activities, including execution of best-in-class sourcing strategies, Request for Proposal (RFP) coordination, and supplier due diligence 
  • Cost Reduction & Avoidance: Leverage procurement best practices to identify and drive capital cost reduction and avoidance, achieving savings that improve organization’s financial performance. 
  • Supplier Relationship Management: Develop and maintain strong relationships with strategic suppliers to ensure optimal service and performance, executing supplier performance evaluations and driving continuous improvement.
  • Contract Negotiation: Lead negotiations with key suppliers to ensure competitive pricing, quality, and delivery timelines, developing and maintaining contracts that align with the company’s goals and values.
  • Procurement Policy & Compliance: Create, enforce, and continually improve procurement policies and procedures to ensure compliance, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency, including adherence to legal and quality agreements.
  • Risk Management: Manage procurement risks, ensuring adherence to internal controls and ethical standards, while staying up to date with industry best practices and regulatory changes.
  • Performance Benchmarking & Reporting: Develop performance capital project benchmarks and scorecards, ensuring key performance indicator reporting for senior management and facilitating continuous improvement efforts.

  • Anticipates factors that could influence strategies and company position in the market.

Minimum Background and Education Requirements 

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Finance, or a related field is required. 
  • An MBA or advanced degree is preferred. 
  • Minimum of 15 years of procurement experience within the Life Sciences industry 
  • At least 10 years leading, managing and developing people with a minimum of 4 years leading leaders (Managers / Supervisors)  
  • At least 5 years in a leadership role managing Capex and Engineering procurement categories. 
  • Experience in Capital Projects strategies, design and construction contracts, and capital equipment sourcing. 
  • Proven track record managing large and complex capital procurement projects. 
  • Experience working in a changing, project driven organization 
  • P&L oversight/responsibility 
  • Change management / large transformations or green field environment 
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities 
  • Strong negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on cost reduction. 
  • Proficiency in procurement and ERP systems. 
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams and senior leadership. 
  • Understanding of procurement laws, regulations, and compliance standards. 
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities
